In the golden era of Taiwanese yacht building, the partnership between veteran yacht charter operator Bill Stevens and the Queen Long Marine shipyard in Kaohsiung yielded some of the most respected, overengineered bluewater passagemakers of the late twentieth century. Chief among these was the Stevens 50, introduced in 1985 as a sophisticated, elongated successor to the celebrated Stevens 47. Designed by the legendary office of Sparkman & Stephens—under the careful guidance of Rod Stephens—the Stevens 50 represented a pinnacle of semicustom offshore cruising design. It was engineered to satisfy the demands of longdistance cruising families who refused to compromise on sailing speed, structural safety, or liveaboard comfort. Built to Lloyd’s specifications with handlaid solid fiberglass, this model emerged as a direct precursor to the modern Hylas Yachts range. Today, the Stevens 50 remains an iconic cult classic, a vessel that has logged countless circumnavigations and continues to be highly sought after by cruisers who measure a boat's value by its ability to shrug off heavy seas while maintaining high daily averages.
