She sailboats: an all–Sparkman & Stephens line from a single English yard
She sailboats carry an unusually compact story: every model came from one Hampshire, England builder, South Hants Engineering, and every hull was designed by the American firm Sparkman & Stephens. The yard built boats for roughly a decade before financial pressure and cheaper continental competition ended its run, but its narrow, disciplined output — one design house across five distinct lines — gives the marque a tighter identity than most builders of its era.
Origins and ownership
South Hants Engineering — recorded in the Sparkman & Stephens Association's own archive as South Hants Marine, and once, in a description of the SHE 36 Water Bear, as "South Hampshire Engineering" (all naming the same Hampshire yard; "Hants" is the traditional abbreviation for Hampshire) — was founded by the Fitzgerald brothers and operated from the late 1960s to the late 1970s. An owner's history of the SHE 33 Sophie holds that the company succumbed to the financial climate of the late 1970s and to competition from cheaper, faster, roomier French-built imports. Its tooling did not simply disappear, though: the SHE 31 moulds were bought by Laird Adams, who developed the design with increased headroom and a new interior, and the Delta 94, SANITY — built on the same Sparkman & Stephens design, hull credited to South Hants Marine — confirms the tooling was reused after closure.
The designers
Sparkman & Stephens designed the entire South Hants range — the SHE 27, the SHE 31 family, the SHE C32, the SHE 33, and the SHE 36 — an exclusivity that also gave the brand its name: the builder's own initials, S.H.E., became "She." Named examples anchor each design in the Sparkman & Stephens Association's archive: the SHE 27 Firecracker IV carries design #2065 and was built in 1972; the 9.5 Traveller AURULA, also built in 1972, carries design #1899, the same hull underlying the SHE 31; the SHE 33 Sophie, launched in 1979, carries design #2291; and the SHE 36 Water Bear, built in 1978, carries design #2166 — a hull that reached Britain by a second route too. Hughes Boat Works' own history records that its Hughes 35, descended from the Northstar 1500, was also built under licence in Britain by South Hants Engineering and sold there as the S.H.E. 36, possibly alongside some Northstar 1500s built directly.
Construction through the eras
South Hants built its hulls in fiberglass with fin keels across the SHE 27, SHE 31, and SHE 33. The SHE 31 and 9.5 Traveller added a distinctive deck treatment the builder called "Shedeck," a wooden laminate enclosed in an epoxy coating over the cockpit and side decks. A few Shes, per Sailing Today, were home-built by enthusiastic amateurs.
Lines and generations
The lineup grew from the original SHE 31 — followed by updated S31, S31B, and 31B versions — through the smaller SHE 27, the SHE C32, the SHE 33, and the SHE 36. South Hants Engineering also produced the 9.5 Traveller as a cruising version of the SHE 31, adding a new deck, higher topsides, and more headroom in response to public demand.
Who She is for
A buyer drawn to She sailboats is buying into a small, design-disciplined marque: one Hampshire yard, one design house, and a single decade of production before the tooling and hulls migrated on to other builders. That narrowness is the brand's appeal — every SHE model traces back to the same Sparkman & Stephens drawing board.
