Royal Huisman sailboats: a custom yard measured in eras, not models

Royal Huisman does not sell a model lineup in the way a production builder does. Since 1884 it has built custom sailing yachts one at a time, and its identity is better told through the materials it mastered in sequence — wood, steel, aluminum, carbon composite — and the handful of famous projects that mark each shift than through any catalog of standard boats. Now credited with nearly 200 unique vessels from eight to 90 metres, the Dutch yard has spent 140 years turning material innovation into a reputation for bespoke construction.

Origins and ownership

The yard traces its history to 1884, when Jan Huisman founded a boatyard in Ronduite, a small hamlet about ten kilometers east of Vollenhove, to build small wooden workboats and fishing boats. In 1930, with the Afsluitdijk dam about to enclose the Zuiderzee, Jan and his brother Jacob redirected the yard toward wooden sailing yachts. By the 1970s the company had outgrown Ronduite — insufficient draught in the adjacent canal, road-transport problems, and no room to expand — and moved to Vollenhove in 1971, where deeper water access and space enabled the growth of both the company and its yachts. Ownership has changed hands more recently than the yard's product line: Koninklijke Doeksen, a Dutch maritime firm run by the fourth generation of the same family, and the investment firm Parcom became shareholders in 2014. A decade later, on the yard's 140th anniversary in 2024, O2 Capital Partners — a Dutch investment firm owned by Philip Sluiter — was announced as the new shareholder of Royal Huisman Group, with the transition completed in early September 2024. Per the transition announcement, the group comprises four brands — Royal Huisman, Huisfit, the components manufacturer Rondal, and the Palma-based refit facility P&G Yachting — employing upward of 350 specialists, with Jan Timmerman named as CEO of Royal Huisman Group.

The designers

Dykstra Naval Architects has been Royal Huisman's most enduring outside design partner, with more than 35 years of J-class experience that included the rebuilds of Shamrock V, Velsheda, and Endeavour before the pair's later collaborations, detailed below. Away from the J-class, the yard's most recent construction method carries its own named collaborators: Nauta Design's Mario Pedol, whose early intuition was that an aluminum-hulled sailing yacht could be built much lighter than the existing aluminum fleet, helped develop the Featherlight program with Royal Huisman's in-house R&D team, and naval architect Reichel/Pugh designed Nilaya, the first yacht built using it.

Construction through the eras

Material change has driven most of the yard's turning points. Wolter Huisman, determined after military service to build in steel, abandoned wood in 1954, launching two steel motor yachts before the successful Beulakermeer sailing yachts; the last steel yachts followed in the early 1960s. The yard then pioneered the bending and welding of aluminum for hull construction in 1964, and its Avenir series rapidly sold fifteen boats. Carbon composite arrived decades later: Royal Huisman was an early adopter from 1997, commissioning a dedicated hall between 1996 and 1999 for carbon spars, hatches, steering consoles, and superstructure components, followed by a second hall in 2000–2001 to build Project 378, the yacht Athena, and a purpose-built on-site facility for sister company Rondal in 2003. Famous projects

Royal Huisman's racing pedigree rests on two yachts named Flyer, both built for Conny van Rietschoten, which won the Whitbread Round the World Race twice, in 1977–78 and in 1981–82 — a race now known as The Ocean Race. In 1981 the yard shifted its focus from large racers to luxurious performance yachts such as Huaso and Belle Fontaine.
