The Peterson Impala 36 is a significant vessel in the history of offshore racing, serving as the productionline descendant of Doug Peterson’s legendary Ganbare. Launched in 1973, Ganbare was a plywood oneoff that stunned the sailing world by nearly winning the One Ton Cup, fundamentally shifting yacht design away from heavydisplacement forms toward the more agile, highballast lines of the IOR (International Offshore Rule) era. Recognizing the demand for a fiberglass version of this hull, the Italian yard Cantiere Navale 71 commissioned Peterson to adapt the lines for mass production. According to Giornale della Vela, the Impala 36 debuted at the 1975 Genoa Boat Show, cementing Peterson's status as a premier naval architect and offering sailors a competitive racing platform that could also serve as a coastal cruiser.
