Buying a used Peterson: know the yard, not just the name
A "Peterson" on a listing names the designer, Doug Peterson, not the builder. His lines were turned into hulls by yards that never worked together — a Taiwan yard building bluewater ketches, a Texas yard building racer-cruisers, an English yard building one-tonners — so the badge alone says little about construction quality, parts availability, or what the boat was built to do. Working out which yard actually built a given hull comes before judging its condition.
Which era to target
The make's cruising line is the Kelly-Peterson 44, a mid-to-late-1970s bluewater ketch that traces to a 1975 partnership between Peterson and yacht broker Jack Kelly, built in Taiwan by Yu Ching Marine from 1976. A Peterson 34 points to a different era and purpose: a Texas-built offshore racer-cruiser from Island Yachts, produced only until 1981, with 92 hulls total. Further back still, a Contessa 35 or 28 points to Peterson's mid-1970s design partnership with English builder Jeremy Rogers and an IOR racing pedigree — the 35 a 1974 One Ton Cup winner before more than 70 cruising versions followed.
What to inspect across the range
The Kelly-Peterson 44's fuel tanks are the one recurring, era-wide problem documented across sources: both boats.com and Cruising World report black iron tanks that develop cracks and leaks over time, and owners who've replaced them describe having to cut the cabin sole apart to do the job. boats.com's owner reports also flag cracking and leaks in the model's stainless steel water tanks. Neither reviewer treats it as an isolated case — both describe it as a pattern across the range.
Navigating the lineup
Because "Peterson" spans a cruising ketch, a Texas racer-cruiser, and an English one-tonner lineage, matching a buyer to the right hull starts with era and purpose rather than the name on the transom: bluewater voyaging points toward the Kelly-Peterson 44, coastal racer-cruising toward the Peterson 34, and one-design racing pedigree toward the Contessa line.
