Nauticat 515 Buyer's Guide
Shopping the brokerage market for a Nauticat 515 means looking at a conservative, heavily built passagemaker rather than a modern performance cruiser. These 50-foot Siltala Yachts sloops emphasize liveaboard volume and offshore stability, and the used fleet tends to reflect that original character with substantial onboard equipment.
Layouts on the Used Market
The 515 was offered with as many as nine berths in four separate cabins, but the two-cabin arrangement is the more decadently spacious private configuration. In either plan, nearly all accommodation space forward of the mast serves a master cabin with ensuite head, and the aft cabin is almost as large. Elbowroom below is abundant, so buyers should evaluate how much sleeping capacity they need against the open, residential feel of the reduced-cabin version.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
Well-found 515s commonly carry equipment for extended independent cruising. Power and energy systems frequently include a watermaker, lithium batteries, inverter, and heating, meaning a buyer can expect self-sufficiency away from shore. Comfort and sail-handling clusters often feature air conditioning, a bow thruster, electric winches, and a spinnaker, which reduce crew workload in harbor and on passage. Navigation and safety outfits regularly comprise radar, AIS, autopilot, chartplotter, and a life raft, while a washing machine and teak decks appear as common liveaboard conveniences.
What to Inspect
The hand-laid fiberglass hull and the builder's traditional construction deserve a normal surveyor's examination as for any 50-foot cruiser.
Availability and Buyer's Takeaway
Typical markets for the Nauticat 515 are Denmark, Latvia, and Canada. For a shopper, the takeaway is straightforward:
- Confirm whether you want the four-cabin charter layout or the decadently spacious two-cabin plan
- Verify the watermaker, lithium bank, and inverter are operational for off-grid cruising
- Check bow thruster and electric winches for ease of short-handed handling
- Expect a stable, comfortable passagemaker rather than a quick boat
