The Laurent Giles Dyarchy Gaff Cutter represents a masterful intersection of traditional workingboat lines and the highly analytical naval architecture of Jack Laurent Giles. Commissioned in 1938 by Roger Pinkney—a prominent conservation architect, pioneering yachtsman, and Vice Commodore of the Royal Cruising Club—the design was born out of a desire to replace Pinkney’s aging 1901 transomsterned Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter (also named Dyarchy). Pinkney’s original cutter was renowned for its seaworthiness but was nearing the end of its structural life. He tasked Laurent Giles with preserving the safety, easy motion, and heavyweather capabilities of the pilot cutter while refining the hull’s entry, run, and overall performance. The resulting design became one of the most envied and admired cruising yachts of the twentieth century, celebrated both in the literature of Eric Hiscock—who cruised extensively on her—and as a blueprint for the ultimate shorthanded passagemaker.
