The Lancer 45 stands as the flagship realization of Richard Valdez’s vision to bridge the gap between highperformance powerboating and traditional bluewater sailing. Produced during the late 1970s and early 1980s in Santa Ana, California, this vessel was designed primarily by Herb David, a naval architect who specialized in the "highspeed motorsailer" niche. Unlike the heavydisplacement, "ketchrigged bathtubs" that characterized the motorsailer market of the mid20th century, the Lancer 45 was engineered with a hull form capable of semiplaning speeds under power, while maintaining a sufficiently tall rig to satisfy coastal and offshore sailors. Its silhouette is defined by a prominent pilothouse and a highvolume hull that prioritizes interior living space, making it a precursor to the modern "deck saloon" cruiser.
