When Richard Valdes cofounded the Lancer Yacht Corporation in Irvine, California, in 1974, he brought with him a legacy of massproduction fiberglass expertise gained during his tenure as the president of Columbia Yachts. While Lancer initially established its reputation with traditional cruising auxiliaries drawn by the noted design team at C&C Yachts, the mid1980s witnessed a radical shift in the company’s product philosophy. Seeking to capture a emerging segment of the trailerable market, Lancer teamed with naval architect Herb David to create a line of hybrid vessels known as "Powersailers" (PS). Introduced in 1985, the Lancer 25 PS represented a polarizing departure from the standard W. Shad Turnerdesigned Lancer 25 pocketcruiser. Unlike traditional pocketcruisers that sacrificed speed under power, the 25 PS was a daring, computeraided attempt to merge the dynamic planing capability of a runabout with the stability and sail area of a fractional sloop.
