Knysna sailboats: a boutique, semi-custom South African catamaran yard

Kevin Fouché and his then business partners founded Knysna Yacht Company in 2002 in Knysna, South Africa, setting out to build catamarans that combined high performance, long-range cruising ability, and fully customized interior layouts. Fouché has remained the company's founder and CEO through the yard's growth into a small, boutique builder rather than a production-line operation.

Origins and the model lineup

The Knysna 440 gave the brand its start: the company purchased tooling for the Angelo Lavranos-designed St. Francis 44 hull, then had its own engineers rework the boat — expanding interior volume, cabin height, and weight distribution beyond the original, repositioning the engines toward the stern, and adding a small stern scoop for better sea-kindliness — before launching it under the Knysna name. That 440 established the brand's reputation, and the lineup grew from there through the 480, whose first hull the builder produced in 2009 (its deck plan has since been revised from that original), the 500 and 500 SE, and, most recently, the 550, offered in 550SL and 550SE variants — the SL built around a sky lounge, the SE with added space for solar panels and other accessories.

Building in Knysna

Fouché has described the yard as working with almost no local supply chain, so nearly everything used to build the boats arrives in Knysna on the back of a bakkie. That constraint sits alongside a semi-custom build philosophy: on the 440, buyers can choose among several cabin, hull, head, and main saloon layouts to suit their own requirements, and the hull itself is laid up by hand and vacuum-bagged in Vinylester resin over an Airex foam core. The later 500 SE carried that engineering forward into hull-shape refinements — its underbody is designed to direct waves downward so the wake from each hull meets well aft of the boat, reducing slamming.

Ownership and scale

By 2015, Knysna had launched its 40th vessel, and SAIL Magazine reported that around that time the yard was building about four Knysna 500s a year — a boutique pace, not a production one. The company is an accredited member of the South African Boatbuilders Export Council, and ownership has extended beyond Fouché alone to include additional partners.

Who Knysna is for

Knysna suits buyers drawn to a small yard where layout choices can vary hull to hull rather than a standardized production catamaran, and who value a builder with one continuous design line running from the Lavranos-designed 440 through to today's 550.
