The Kingfisher 20 stands as a landmark in British yachting history, representing one of the earliest and most successful transitions into Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) production. Launched in 1959 by Westfield Engineering Co. (Marine) Ltd. in Poole, the design by R.A.G. Nierop was a radical departure from the wooden dayboats of the era. Built to withstand the rigors of the English Channel and the tidal estuaries of the South Coast, the Kingfisher 20 was marketed as a "goanywhere" family cruiser. Its distinctive flushdeck profile, which eliminates the traditional coachroof in favor of a higher sheer line, provided an interior volume that was practically unheard of for a 20foot vessel in the late 1950s. This model served as the foundation for the entire Kingfisher range, proving that a small, twinkeel yacht could be both seaworthy and affordable.
