The Herreshoff SClass, often referred to simply as the "SBoat," represents a pivotal moment in naval architecture, marking the transition from gaffrigged traditions to the modern Marconi era. Designed by Nathanael Greene Herreshoff in 1919 and first launched in 1920, the SClass was conceived as a highperformance onedesign racer capable of handling the choppy waters of Narragansett Bay and Long Island Sound. Approximately 95 to 100 hulls were produced by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company between 1919 and 1941, and remarkably, a significant percentage of the original fleet remains active today. The boat's enduring appeal lies in its "sweet" hull form—a 27foot, 6inch frame with a long, elegant overhang and a heavy lead keel that provides a stable yet spirited sailing experience. According to the Herreshoff SClass Association, the design was radical for its time, featuring a curved mast and a highaspectratio rig that outperformed almost everything in its size class.
