Gemini sailboats: a narrow-beam catamaran built on one uninterrupted hull lineage

Gemini's name belongs to a single design lineage that survived a factory fire, three changes of ownership, and two changes of contract builder without ever fully starting over. Every catamaran built under the name, from the first Gemini 31 in 1981 to the Legacy 35 three decades later, traces its hull shape back to a British naval architect's 1969 drawings - revised many times, but never replaced.

Origins and ownership

Tony Smith was born in Lowestoft, England, and started sailing at eight. At nineteen he bought plans for a 24-foot Arthur Piver trimaran, finished building it in 1964, and sailed it solo from Britain to France; he went on to study engineering at several colleges, including the University of London, and trained as a research engineer, meeting his future wife, Sue, at a British engineering firm. After crewing in the first Round Britain Race aboard a 33-foot Piver trimaran, Smith entered the race again in 1967 in a self-designed trimaran that became the prototype for the Telstar, named for the transatlantic television satellite. Production of the folding-wing, 26-foot Telstar began in 1970 at a factory in Sandwich Marina, on England's South Coast - the same marina where fellow multihull pioneer Derek Kelsall was based - and more than 270 were built there over the following decade, alongside eight of a larger Telstar 35 beginning in 1974. Smith started his own boatbuilding business in 1971.

In 1980, having acquired the molds of the Aristocat, a 30-foot cruising catamaran whose maker had gone into administration, Tony and Sue Smith left recession-hit Britain and moved their business to Mayo, Maryland, founding Performance Cruising Inc. Within months, in 1981, fire destroyed the factory and the Telstar's own molds, shipped over from England. Out of that fire, Smith developed the Aristocat design into the Gemini catamaran, and the first boat was christened Phoenix. The Baltimore Sun reported that by 1994, fourteen years after the move and the fire, Tony and Sue Smith - he overseeing design and manufacturing, she running the paperwork - had built Performance Cruising into the largest manufacturer of cruising catamarans in the United States, from three warehouses on Maryland's West River.

Smith kept a parallel line alive alongside the Gemini's success, reviving the Telstar as a bigger, 28-foot design in the mid-2000s - roughly 80 more hulls were built alongside Gemini production - before recession-era pressure ended Telstar production in 2009. By 2008 and 2009, facing stricter environmental regulation and that same recession, the company evolved into Gemini Catamarans, joined the Catamaran Group, and Tony's daughter, Laura Smith Hershfeld, took over as president. Performance Cruising's own production ended in 2010; Hunter Marine, and later Marlow Hunter, took over building the line under contract in Alachua, Florida, producing 21 of the "Design Touch" 105Mc in their first eighteen months. In September 2014, Gemini Catamarans shifted production again, to the Catalina Yachts facility in Largo, Florida - a move Hershfeld said was an easy one, since Catalina's philosophy of balancing tradition and innovation with owner and dealer feedback mirrored Gemini's own.

The designers

The Gemini's hull form did not originate with Tony Smith. British naval architect Ken Shaw drew the lines of the Aristocat in 1969, and Smith adapted that design into the first Gemini 31, continuing to refine the same hull and deck molds through the 3000, 3200, and 3400 over the years that followed. Decades later, when the Legacy 35 - still rooted in that same Aristocat-derived hull - went into production under the Hunter/Marlow Hunter partnership, Warren Luhrs took charge of the boat's cockpit specifically, opening it up and moving the mainsheet traveller to the hardtop.

Construction through the eras

Early Geminis, including the original 31 and the 3000 built through 1990, used a solid fiberglass hull of mat and woven roving in a polyester resin, a balsa-cored deck, and bulkheads left free-floating rather than tabbed to the hull - a design similar to aircraft construction. Beginning with the Gemini 3200 in 1990, a layer of vinylester resin was added to the hull layup specifically to guard against osmotic blistering, a change carried forward through the 3400 and into the 105M, introduced in 1993, whose hand-laid solid fiberglass hull combined a vinylester barrier coat with balsa coring confined to the deck's horizontal surfaces. The Legacy 35, launched under the Alachua partnership in 2013, replaced the pivoting centerboards that let earlier Geminis float in just over eighteen inches of water with a pair of fixed keels, trading shoal draft for better protection when the boat dries out.

Lines and generations

The Gemini was, by two independent accounts, the first production cruising catamaran built in the United States; a profile of Smith by Trilogy Sailing also credits it as the best-selling catamaran in the world through the 1980s and '90s. Over the three decades following its 1981 introduction, roughly 1,000 boats were built across five versions of that one design: the 31, rebranded 3000 after its first 28 hulls; the 3200 and 3400 that followed it through the 1990s; the long-running 105M and 105Mc; and the Legacy 35, launched in 2013 as what Hershfeld called "every man's" Gemini. Even the Legacy 35, redesigned many times over that run, still differed in hull spacing, freeboard, and bridgedeck clearance from the newer French, South African, and Australian cruising catamarans it competed against - evidence of how much of the original 1969 hull persisted. Catalina Yachts, which took over Gemini production in 2014, also built the Freestyle 37 for the Gemini company in Florida.

Gemini built its reputation on a narrow-beam, low-bridgedeck catamaran, a combination Tony Smith and his son tested by sailing an Atlantic crossing to demonstrate the hull was seaworthy.
