The Freedom 21 Slp (Sloop) represents a definitive moment in Gary Hoyt’s crusade to simplify the sailing experience. While the original Freedom 21 was launched as a catketch with a single mast stepped far forward, the "Slp" or Sloop variant was introduced to satisfy sailors who desired a more traditional sail plan and improved upwind performance without sacrificing the brand's core tenets. Built by Tillotson Pearson Inc. (TPI) in Rhode Island, this 21foot microcruiser utilizes a freestanding carbon fiber mast, eliminating the complex web of stays and shrouds found on nearly every other vessel in its class. This design choice was radical in the early 1980s, offering a "clean" deck and a rig that could be stepped and unstepped with relative ease by two people, making it an ideal candidate for those who split their time between a mooring and a trailer.
