The Columbia 10.7 represents a significant departure from the "bubbletop" aesthetics and racercruiser leanings of earlier Bill Trippdesigned Columbia models. Launched in 1976 during the ownership of the Whittaker Corporation, the 10.7 was the flagship of the "metric series" and a direct collaboration with the celebrated Australian naval architect Alan Payne. Known primarily for designing the America’s Cup challenger Gretel, Payne brought a sophisticated, seaworthy approach to the American production market. The model, also known by its design number 351, was marketed as a "widebody super cruiser," prioritizing interior volume and stability over raw lightair speed. Approximately 200 hulls were produced between 1976 and 1979, with initial units built at the Chesapeake, Virginia plant before production expanded.
