Designed by the prolific Polish naval architect Andrzej Skrzat, the Clever 23 represents a milestone in the European trailersailer movement of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Originally manufactured by the Polish shipyard Sportlake (which later evolved into Delphia Yachts), the boat was marketed across Europe under several names, most notably as the Sportina 680, but also as the Pretty 23 and Caribu. In the Dutch and German markets, the model was imported and popularized as the Clever 23. Importers slightly adjusted its nominal length in marketing brochures to 7.20 meters (23.62 feet) by including the overhang of the bow pulpit and the transomhung rudder, though the molded fiberglass hull itself measures 6.80 meters (22.31 feet). Designed primarily to navigate the shallow Masurian Lakes of Poland and the inland canals of the Netherlands, this vessel was engineered as an accessible, easily transportable weekend cruiser. It successfully bridged the gap between small, spartan daysailers and larger, nontrailerable coastal yachts, competing directly with contemporaries like the Jeanneau Sun 2000, Beneteau First 211, and Hunter Liberty 23.
