Designed by the renowned French naval architect Gilbert Caroff of the CaroffDuflos bureau, the Chatam 60 represents the absolute zenith of the French expeditioncruising philosophy. Conceived during an era when longrange cruising meant preparing for both the icestrewn passes of the high latitudes and the shallow, uncharted estuaries of the tropics, the Chatam 60 is a rare, semicustom beast. Most examples were built by specialized French yards such as Aluvoile or Alu Marine. Unlike the massproduced, fixedkeel fiberglass yachts dominating the global market, this vessel was designed around a rugged, multichime aluminum hull and an integral centerboard (dériveur intégral). This design allows a vessel of nearly sixty feet to reduce its draft to just over three feet, enabling it to beach upright on its own flat bottom or seek shelter in shallow anchorages completely inaccessible to other bluewater cruisers of its size.
