In 1969, Howard D. Stern founded Challenger Yachts Corp. in Wilmington, California, with a clear mission: to build production sailboats that challenged the prevailing trend of lightweight, lightly constructed coastal racers of the era. Designer Hector Ballester was commissioned to draw the Challenger 32, a vessel that would define the shipyard’s "overbuilt" construction philosophy. At a time when massproduction builders were beginning to thin out fiberglass laminates to reduce material costs, Stern’s yard famously backed its boats with an unprecedented tenyear, transferable "unconditional hull guarantee." Designed as a robust coastal cruiser with the structural integrity for offshore work, the Challenger 32 stood in stark contrast to its contemporary competitors, such as the lighter Catalina 30 or the more performanceoriented Islander 32. Ballester gave the boat a highfreeboard silhouette and a generous beam of 11.08 feet, maximizing interior volume to create a living space that rivaled many 35to38foot designs of its day.
