Buying a used Challenger: confirm which builder before anything else
A "Challenger" listing alone says little: three or four separate companies put the same name on entirely different boats, and a boat's construction, design pedigree, and even its safety rating depend entirely on which one built it. A French-built Challenger carries a certified-unsinkable rating and a retractable lifting keel; a British-built Challenger 35 is a heavy-displacement cruiser from an entirely different design brief; and a further block of the lineup is documented only in catalog listings, with no confirmable builder history at all. Treat every listing as its own investigation until the model and builder are confirmed.
Which era to target
Within the French lineage, the 1977 launch of the Micro is the dividing line that matters: it introduced the yard's certified-unsinkable standard, which every model built afterward carried, including the Bravo and Super Bravo, launched in 1980 and built through 1984. The Challenger 35 belongs to a narrower but disputed window -- one account dates it to 1975, another to the early 1980s -- and its sister hulls bracket it usefully even so: the centre-cockpit Warrior 35 came first, the pilothouse Voyager 35 came later. For the further, catalog-only American-attributed models and the handful of other numbered designs in the lineup, no documented era or design window survives to guide buyers at all.
Navigating the lineup
Builder and country, not size, are what should sort the full model directory on this page. A compact, shoal-draft French cruiser with a lifting keel and an unsinkable rating is a different boat, in every respect that matters to a buyer, from a heavy, simply finished British 35-footer built by Trident Marine -- and either is a different proposition again from the lineup's remaining models, which carry no confirmable design or building history beyond their catalog listing.
