The Caribbea 30 holds a unique place in the legacy of South African naval architect Dudley Dix. Conceived in 1981, the vessel was originally commissioned by the Chaplin family of the Hout Bay Yacht Club for their company, Imberhorne. Having requested design sketches from both the famed Canadian firm C&C Yachts and Dudley Dix, they ultimately selected the young South African’s proposal, making the Caribbea 30 Dix’s very first production design. While the prototype was constructed in wood, the highly regarded shipyard Nebe Boatworks soon took over the molds to build a production glassreinforced plastic (GRP) version in Hout Bay. Designed to bridge the gap between lively coastal racers and rugged offshore cruisers, the Caribbea 30 represented a structural "sweet spot" in Nebe's lineup: larger and more accommodating than the entrylevel Cape 28, but far more manageable and affordable than the legendary Shearwater 39.
