The dawn of the modern bareboat charter industry can be traced directly to a single, highly innovative vessel: the Carib 41. Developed in the late 1960s by Dr. John "Jack" Van Ost, a New Jersey dentist with a visionary business sense, and designed by the renowned naval architect Alan Gurney—famed for drawing highperformance racing machines like Windward Passage—the Carib 41 was born out of sheer necessity. Van Ost’s company, Caribbean Sailing Yachts (CSY), had launched its initial charter fleet using stock ChrisCraft Capri 30s. However, the relentless trade winds and demanding sea conditions of the Caribbean quickly proved that standard domestic coastal cruisers of the era were illsuited for the rigors of commercial bareboat service. Van Ost realized he needed a boat engineered from the keel up for durability, comfort, and safety in tropical waters. He commissioned Gurney to design a fortyonefoot cruising auxiliary, contracting Whitney Operations of Long Island, New York, to build it. Production ran from 1970 to 1973, with approximately thirty hulls completed. The Carib 41 was not only the first purposebuilt bareboat charter yacht in history, but it also pioneered the "charter leaseback" program, forever altering how recreational yachts are purchased and managed.
