Introduced in 1978 during the height of the North American trailersailer boom, the Buccaneer 220 was conceived by the renowned naval architect Gary Mull to serve as an accessible, highvolume pocket cruiser. Built by Buccaneer Yachts, which operated as a sailboatfocused division of powerboat giant Bayliner Marine Corporation, the model represented a strategic effort to capture the entrylevel sailing market during a period of fuel crises and soaring interest in economical recreation. Mull’s design brought a more modern, performanceoriented pedigree to a market space dominated by more conservative shapes. The tooling of the Buccaneer 220 was eventually transitioned to the US Yachts division of Bayliner, where it was slightly refined and marketed as the US 22. Over its production run, the boat established a reputation as an exceptionally spacious pocket cruiser that prioritized interior volume and ease of trailering without completely sacrificing sailing performance.
