The Black Soo represents a radical departure from the heavydisplacement norms of the late 1950s, standing as a testament to the visionary genius of Dutch naval architect E.G. van de Stadt. Conceived in 1957 as a highperformance racing machine, the Black Soo was one of the first true ultralight displacement boats (ULDB) designed to prove that a plywood "skimming dish" could survive and dominate in punishing offshore conditions. Named "Soo" after the Sioux Indian word for "little snake" to complement its nearsister design, Zeeslang (sea snake), the model challenged the prevailing handicap rules of its era. It remains an iconic, forwardthinking piece of maritime history, delivering raw, dinghylike sailing performance in a 29.7foot offshore keelboat package.
