When legendary Dutch naval architect Gerard Dykstra set out to design a yacht for his personal retirement cruising, he did not seek the plasticwrapped luxury typical of mainstream builders. Instead, he envisioned a vessel capable of navigating the icechoked waters of Greenland and wintering in the high latitudes, yet agile enough to be easily managed by a singlehanded or doublehanded crew. The result was the Bestevaer 53 ST, first launched in 2004 by KM Yachtbuilders in Makkum, Netherlands. Characterized by its unpainted aluminum hull, straight bow, and pilotcutter aesthetic, the Bestevaer 53 ST immediately distinguished itself from both its contemporary fiberglass rivals and other aluminum cruisers of the era. Where standard production boats offered compromised layouts for the charter market, the 53 ST was conceived as a highly specialized, customizable, and virtually indestructible expedition machine built to withstand the harshest environments on Earth.
