The resulting 4.84-metre beam is four centimetres wider than the predecessor, and the pronounced chine gives the topsides a purposeful, dynamic silhouette rather than the rounded softness of earlier Oceanis generations. From astern, the boat reads as wide and substantial; the lifting swim platform and transom BBQ station reinforce the impression that the designers intended the stern to function as a second living space. Draught options of 1.92 m (shoal) and 2.36 m (deep) give owners a meaningful choice between marina access and windward performance.

Rig, Handling, and Performance

The standard fit pairs a furling mast with a self-tacking jib, a configuration that makes genuine short-handed sailing achievable without compromise or embarrassment. For owners who want more, the First Line Pack adds a taller mast and increased sail area — effectively a performance-oriented sloop capable of competing on any point of sail. Running rigging is led entirely aft, which has become the norm at this size, but the arrangement has been rethought compared with the 51.1: working winches are placed at the walkaround step, so a crew member can operate hoisting independently of the helmsman, while the genoa sheet winches have been moved close enough to the helm that the skipper can trim light-wind sails without leaving the wheel. The helm consoles themselves are newly proportioned — previous 51.1 consoles were too small in standard form or absurdly oversized on upgrade; the new ones strike the balance the class demands. Nauta Design has transformed what was a creditable but plainly functional interior into something closer to a boutique hotel concept. The standard three-cabin, two-bathroom layout foregrounds the owner's suite: a 160-centimetre island bed flanked by seating, two hanging lockers, large coaming compartments, and oversized hull windows that frame the seascape when at anchor. A laminated wooden facing at the forward bulkhead and new Venetian blinds give the cabin a warmth previous Oceanis interiors rarely achieved. The galley is properly thought through — a full-height refrigerator, Corian worktops, two sinks, and a service hatch with dedicated storage make provisioning and meal preparation workable on extended passages. Beneteau has also addressed a long-standing criticism directly: 2-millimetre-thick furniture bandings replace the thin, failure-prone edgings that critics noted on earlier models, and Alpi oak veneer loses the plastic sheen that undermined perceived quality. The difference in tactile impression is meaningful. For charter operators or larger crews, the five-cabin, three-bathroom version reorganises the forward owner's suite into two full guest cabins, each with its own heads — a conversion that works well given the boat's overall beam.

Electrical Systems and Autonomy

One aspect of the specification that drew scrutiny at the Cannes debut is the battery bank. Only AGM gel batteries are listed in the standard options; lithium-ion chemistry does not appear on the inaugural equipment list, which reads as a conservative choice for a boat offering dishwashers, washing machines, and watermakers as optional consumers. Solar generation is provided by 430 Wp across panels in the coachroof and over the owner's cabin, with additional capacity possible if the optional rigid bimini arch is fitted. The wiring installation for the solar panels drew specific comment — cables, struts, and zip ties were left exposed at the deck penetrations in a way that sits awkwardly with the interior's premium ambitions. This is a detail-level concern rather than a functional one, but on a yacht marketing itself on quality of finish it is worth noting. The Seanapps mobile platform integrates battery state, tank levels, and routing — a connected boat management system accessible from a smartphone.

The Verdict

The Oceanis 52 is the most resolved fifty-footer Beneteau has produced. Biscontini's hull form delivers the stability and sailing power the class requires; Nauta's interior genuinely advances the quality argument that has trailed the Oceanis range for years; and the cockpit rethink produces a layout that works as well underway as it does at anchor. The boat is unambiguously oriented toward comfort-first cruising rather than racing pedigree, but it has sufficient rig options and thoughtful sail-handling architecture to be taken offshore without apology. The AGM-only battery configuration is a genuine gap for liveaboards or serious bluewater sailors who want to run the full options list, and the exposed solar wiring is the kind of finish shortcut that the price point does not excuse. Taken as a whole, though, this is an impressive eighth generation.
