Buying a used Zuanelli: judge the designer and the era, not a house style

A used Zuanelli isn't the product of one design philosophy carried across decades — it's a small, family-run Lake Garda yard that built most of each hull in-house but handed the actual design work to a short rotation of outside architects, model by model. That means the badge alone tells a buyer less than it would with a yard built around a single house designer: what matters is which of Zuanelli's few named models a given hull is, and which era of the yard's own history it came from.

Which era to target

Zuanelli's fiberglass sailboat line effectively begins in 1975, when the yard acquired construction know-how from Alpa of Offanengo — before that, Pietro Zuanelli's operation had done boat storage, repairs, and interior fit-out for other shipyards rather than building complete boats of its own. A named-designer era followed through the 1980s and 1990s: Sparkman & Stephens's Z40 came first, then Alain Jézéquel's FAX and Studio Starkel's Z49 and Z52DH as the range grew to four production models by 1999. After the 2008-09 financial crisis, the yard's focus shifted again, building out consulting and refitting services it had already begun expanding from 2007 — a Zuanelli from this later window is as likely to reflect the yard's refit shop, including its move from classic teak decking to laminates and synthetic teak, as it is to be a new production model.

What to inspect across the range

Because Zuanelli keeps most construction in-house — Mario Zuanelli has put the figure at 80 to 90 percent, down to who assembles the engine and keel bulb — two boats of the same model aren't guaranteed to be built quite the same way. Yacht e Vela's review of the Z40 found buyers specifying three different engines across that model's production run (Volvo, Nanni Mercedes, and Yanmar units, from 60 to 90 horsepower) and no abnormal hull flex under maximum sail load. Confirm what a specific hull was actually built with rather than assuming it matches another example of the same model.

Zuanelli's sailboat range runs from the roughly 33-foot Fax up to the Z49, the line's flagship, with production years clustering from the mid-1980s through 1999 — a narrower window than many longer-lived European yards offer.
