Buying a used Warrior: confirm which Warrior it is
A "Warrior" listing could be one of two completely different boats: a heavy British bluewater monohull built by Trident Marine Ltd, or an American performance catamaran descended from John Conser's 1972 design. They share no builder, no designer, and no construction in common -- only the name. Before weighing condition or price, a buyer needs to know which lineage a given hull belongs to, since inspection priorities, expected sailing character, and even the kind of parts and knowledge support available differ completely between them.
Which era to target
On the monohull side, the Warrior 35 was the earliest of Trident Marine's three-boat 35-foot family, followed by the Warrior 38 (1985-1987) and the larger, later Warrior 40 (1988) -- so a 40 represents the mature end of the range, built after Trident Marine and its designers had already worked through the smaller hulls. All were built on a long keel and modest rig that Yachting Monthly rated strong in heavy weather, at the cost of excitement in calmer sailing -- a trait worth expecting regardless of size. On the catamaran side, a Warrior 29 sits early in John Conser's design lineage, dating to his original 1972 launch; later Conser-branded cats, developed over the following two decades and culminating in the Conser 47, represent a more refined evolution of the same design thinking.
What to inspect across the range
On the Warrior 40, at least one owner found the foredeck flexing under the windlass's load, a problem resolved by refitting substantial stainless-steel bearers above and below deck, per Yachting Monthly's review -- worth checking on any monohull carrying a bow-mounted windlass. No comparable documented issue turned up for the Warrior 38 or for the catamaran line.
