Buying a used Sweden Yacht: confirm which company built it before anything else
Two different companies have used the Sweden Yachts name. The original Stenungsund yard, founded in 1976, built a tight run of Norlin/Östmann-designed performance cruisers before a 2008-09 bankruptcy ended its run. A later, unrelated holding company — the Sweden Yachts Group, tied to Malö, CR and Regina Yachts — used the same name from around 2018 before collapsing into insolvency itself, with its former head criminally convicted of fraud and tax evasion in 2025. A boat carrying the Sweden Yachts name from the original yard's decades has nothing to do with that later company's failure; a boat built during the Group era does. Establishing which company built a given hull comes before any other question about condition or value.
Which era to target
The earliest boats trace to the Comfort 34, a Kenneth Albinsson design that Sweden Yachts took over and renamed the C34 in 1978, building it until 1986 — a more conventional cruising boat than what followed. From 1986 the yard shifted into a Peter Norlin and Jens Östmann-designed line that carried the brand for the next two decades: the 41, 38, 36, 340, 50, 370, 390 and 45 all fall inside this window, in production runs as small as single digits and rarely more than a hundred hulls. A German Frers-designed flagship, the Sweden Yachts 80, sits apart from that line as a two-off built in 1998. Boats from any of these original-yard eras predate the Group entirely. A Sweden Yachts 40 from 2018 onward, by contrast, belongs to the Group era, and buyers should weight that history — the Group's own insolvency and its former head's criminal conviction — into their due diligence on that boat specifically.
Navigating the lineup
Original-yard boats run from the roughly 34-foot Comfort-derived C34 up through the two-off 80-footer, with most of the Norlin/Östmann production clustered in the high-30s-to-50-foot range. Buyers should decide first whether they're shopping the original yard's decades or a Group-era boat, then narrow by size within that era — the full model directory on this page breaks the range down hull by hull.
