Buying a used Saare: a small custom yard, not a production line

Saare is the yacht brand of a single Estonian shipyard that has operated continuously since 1991 — first as a subcontractor for Nordic yards, then, from 2007, under its own name — and it builds in far smaller runs than a mass-production marque. That matters for a buyer: the yard has built individual hulls "in very different versions" depending on customer wishes, and its own interior and decking choices have shifted over time, so two boats sharing a model name can differ meaningfully in fit-out. Judging a used Saare means reading the specific boat in front of you rather than assuming a fixed spec from the model designation.

Which era to target

The yard's own-brand era began in 2007 with the center-cockpit 41cc, developed by Finnish designer Karl Johan Strahlmann together with Finngulf founder Stig Nordblad; the aft-cockpit 41ac followed, sharing the same hull, keel, rudder, and rig. The Saare 38 came next as the yard's second own-brand design, and the yard concentrated production on the 38 and 41 after Finngulf's 2011 bankruptcy pushed it toward full independence — a useful marker for dating a boat's construction era. Lithium battery options have been available since 2018, which can help narrow a hull's build window, and the top-of-range 46 CC, also known in at least one account as the Saare SC, represents the custom-order end of the lineup.

What to inspect across the range

Because Saare builds to individual specification, confirm which interior wood, decking, and keel configuration a specific hull actually carries rather than assuming it from the model name: the 38's interior was initially finished entirely in Khaya mahogany, with more recent boats finished in light oak instead, some with horizontal grain, and the yard offers Flexiteek PVC decking as an alternative to teak. Ask what resin and bonding practice a given hull was built under — Saare's standard practice is vacuum-infused, vinyl-ester-resin construction with the hull-to-deck joint glued all the way around rather than only in places, backed by a five-year guarantee against osmosis, all of which are worth confirming against a specific boat's documentation. On the 38, Yachting Monthly flagged the fixed windscreen and high, wide coamings as a feature worth checking for on deck.
