Buying a used Reflex: one model, two names

A listing filed under "Reflex" is a single boat: the Reflex 38, designed and built in 1999 on the Isle of Wight by Christian Stimson and Harley Race Boats, and just as often listed instead as a "Clipper Reflex 38," after the events company that commissioned and operated the fleet. A buyer searching only one of those names risks missing boats filed under the other - treat "Reflex" and "Clipper Reflex" as the same boat under different labels, not two different models to compare.

Which era to target

There's only one era to know. Harley Race Boats, under principal Nigel Harley, built the hull, and Christian Stimson supplied the design - the pairing Clipper Ventures plc's chairman Sir Robin Knox-Johnston credited with a strong record of winning boats when the company went looking for someone to design its charter fleet. Clipper Ventures supplied only the commercial name and ran the finished boats afterward, so a listing that credits "Clipper" as the builder is describing the operator, not the yard that actually built the boat.

Navigating the lineup

There's no lineup to navigate - the full model directory on this page covers one boat. What varies hull to hull is how hard it was used. Every Reflex 38 left the yard built to charter-fleet ISO safety standards on top of a raceboat's IRC-optimized construction, and Clipper Ventures put that construction to work: a ten-strong fleet based in the Solent, rotated through corporate hospitality, sail training and regatta duty under professional instructors rather than kept by one owner. Yachting Monthly reported that Clipper Ventures later announced plans to sell that division and its fleet. A boat with that kind of working history is worth assessing on its own condition rather than assumed pedigree - professionally crewed, charter-fleet use leaves different wear than years under a single owner.
