Buying a used Maine Cat: an individual hull's history matters more than a fleet-wide track record

Maine Cat is a small, family-run yard rather than a large production builder, so a used buyer is really assessing one hull's build and maintenance record more than a brand-wide manufacturing standard. There's no large dealer network or high-volume parts pipeline behind these boats the way there is with a mass-production catamaran line — what a given boat's owners did or didn't maintain carries more weight here than it would on a bigger-volume brand.

Which era to target

Maine Cat's signature "open design" — cockpit and saloon merged into one continuous space — runs across the range, including the later Maine Cat 38's own open-bridgedeck layout. What changed between the earlier and later boats is how that space gets enclosed. Wave Train's review of the Maine Cat 41 found its open-air saloon apt to be drafty and cool in poor conditions even with the side curtains down, and its fixed hardtop can block sightlines to the sails, making trim harder to judge from the helm. Catamaran Guru describes the Maine Cat 38 addressing exactly that tradeoff, replacing the roll-up soft sides of earlier models with a more protected pilothouse and permanent sides, along with high-aspect daggerboards and retracting rudders. A buyer prioritizing weather protection should look toward the 38; a buyer who wants the original roll-up-sided, open-air layout should look to the 30 or 41.

What to inspect across the range

One documented fix spans more than a single boat. Practical Sailor traced cracking on an early Maine Cat 41 to a hull-to-bulkhead joint originally bonded with polyester putty, which loosened and flexed under sailing loads; the builder's response was switching to a Plexus bond for that joint, worth checking for cracking on any older hull built before the change. More broadly, Maine Cat's boats are built around a Core-Cell foam core with a fiberglass composite skin — the same basic recipe Mainebiz documented in 2007 and confirmed independently in later reviews of both the 38 and the 41 — so a hull whose coring or skin doesn't match that documented build, or shows repairs inconsistent with it, is worth a surveyor's closer look.

Size is the more useful axis for narrowing a search: the range runs from the trailerable 22-footer up through the 30, the 41, and the more enclosed 38, each representing a different balance of trailerability, liveaboard space, and weather protection rather than a strict upgrade path. The full model directory on this page breaks the range down by length and year for buyers ready to compare individual listings.
