Buying a used Luffe: one builder's continuous hand, not a brand
A used Luffe is, more than most brands, a boat built by one person: founder Oluf Jørgensen has personally designed and built every Luffe since 1973, setting each hull's lines and sailing characteristics while leaving interior layout to the original buyer's own order. That build-to-order approach means two Luffes of the same model can differ meaningfully belowdecks, even as the hull and rig stay consistent with Jørgensen's own hand. Buying used means judging the individual boat and its build generation more than chasing a brand name — output has stayed small for decades, under ownership that has not changed hands, so provenance and condition carry more weight than they would with a higher-volume builder.
Which era to target
Some structure has stayed constant across every Luffe: a lead keel and a substantial aluminium rudder shaft, sized to shrug off heavy strain, bolted down over a steel frame beneath the keel for added stiffness. The hull layup is where eras genuinely diverge. For years, buyers ordering new could choose between a standard polyester build and a lighter, Osmosis-resistant alternative laminated over balsa in a vacuum process — meaning two boats from the same model year can carry different core materials depending on what the original buyer specified, not on when the hull was built. By late 2025, that choice had tipped decisively toward carbon fiber, standard across the yard's newest range rather than an ordered option. Confirming which hull material a specific boat actually received is worth more than reading off its model year.
Navigating the lineup
The used market spans Luffe's full history, from the 1979 Luffe 37 — the model that built the yard's reputation and stayed in the catalog longer than any other — through the 44's early-eighties racing pedigree at the Sjælland Rundt, up to the compact three-boat range the yard had settled into by late 2025: the 3.6, the 40.20, and the recently introduced 45+. That gap between a decades-deep used-boat history and a compact modern range means a buyer's size and era decision does most of the narrowing before construction generation even enters the picture. Weighing hull size against build era, rather than treating "Luffe" as a single interchangeable spec, is the more useful way to approach the full model directory on this page.
