Buying a used Luders: figure out which Luders it is

A used Luders is really one of three different boats sharing a name, and that distinction shapes what "condition" even means before hull and rig come into it. Some carry Luders' own design and construction — a wood-hulled one-design, a Naval Academy training yawl, a 12-Metre lineage built at the Stamford yard itself. Others carry a Bill Luders design built entirely somewhere else, at Cheoy Lee in Hong Kong or Allied Yachts in Catskill, New York. And a share of the fleet carries the Luders builder's mark on a design that isn't his at all. None of this shows up in a model number, so establishing which pattern applies is worth doing before anything else.

Which era to target

Three build-era boundaries matter more than a model name alone. Boats from the yard's first decades — the hot-molded mahogany Luders 16 and the laminate-wood Luders 24 among them — are wood construction from a yard that closed in 1968, so a wood-specific survey belongs alongside a sailing survey. A parallel fiberglass track exists for some of the same designs: after the Naval Academy's 1938 training fleet was built in wood, its replacement fleet arrived in fiberglass in the 1960s, and outside builders licensed fiberglass reproductions of the 16 through the sixties and seventies — worth confirming which material, and which builder, a given hull actually is rather than assuming the model name settles it. In the yard's last stretch before its 1968 close, Luders itself was turning out Carl Alberg's Sea Sprite design in fiberglass, even as Allied Yachts in Catskill built Bill Luders' own Luders 33 design between 1966 and 1974 — two boats from the same years, wearing entirely different relationships to the Luders name.
