Buying a used JPK: a racing yard's construction, on the secondhand market
A used JPK never passed through a conventional retail system: a 2018 profile found the yard running one-to-two-year waiting lists while skipping boat shows and advertising altogether, selling almost entirely on word of mouth and racing results. With no boat-show presence or advertising trail to research, a buyer is leaning on the previous owner's paperwork and racing log rather than any brand marketing history — condition, maintenance records and how a boat was campaigned matter more here than they would for a mass-market cruiser. Category fit is the other first decision: JPK's racing lineage (the 960, 1010, 1030 and 1050, plus the midsize 1080 and 1180) is a different proposition from its Fast Cruiser (FC) line built for long-distance sailing, even though both come out of the same Larmor-Plage workshop.
Which era to target
Jacques Valer has drawn every JPK hull since 2003, giving the range a single design thread, but that thread bent in 2019: the JPK 1030 marked a deliberate shift in his approach toward boats built to win short- and single-handed offshore races, a direction the JPK 1050 carried further in 2025. A racing-line boat from 2019 on reflects that newer thinking more directly than an earlier model. Jean-Baptiste Dejeanty joined the design office in 2020 to support Valer's work, so boats from that point forward also carry his input. On the cruising side, Yachting World described the JPK 39 FC, which replaced the JPK 38 FC in 2021, as a second-generation design with a reworked hull shape and more interior volume than its predecessor — a meaningful step up for a buyer prioritizing cruising comfort over the original 38 FC.
Navigating the lineup
The range splits cleanly along JPK's own history: a racing lineage running from the 960 through the 1010, 1030 and 1050, with the 1080 and 1180 sitting alongside it as larger, offshore-capable siblings, and a Fast Cruiser line built for distance sailing, running from the 38 FC and 39 FC up through the 45 FC. Buyers chasing outright performance and class results should look to the racing lineage; those wanting a hull built the same way but dressed for long passages will find it in the FC boats. The full model directory on this page breaks the range down boat by boat.
