Buying a used Invicta: one design, several builders

A used "Invicta" is a single 1964 design, the Invicta 26 — not a marque built end-to-end by one company. Because the hulls were moulded by one yard and finished by several different ones, "Invicta" on a transom describes a design lineage more than a manufacturing standard: the real variable a buyer is assessing is which builder finished a given hull, not just which model. That vetting is worth doing: a 2001 Yachting Monthly used-boat test judged the design well suited to a couple or young family in rough conditions, and quick enough to keep pace with newer boats.

Which era to target

The clearest dividing line runs by builder rather than by year alone. Tyler Boat Company moulded the earlier hulls and passed them to a variety of fit-out shops, so two boats sharing the same Tyler-moulded hull can still differ in everything finished after the hull left the mould, even with an identical hull and keel underneath. Later hulls came from a different yard entirely: FI-Craft in Essex moulded them and finished them itself or handed the job to Salterns Yacht Agency — a genuine change of builder, not just a running update, and a different finishing history from anything built in the Tyler era. Within that timeline, look for whether a boat is a Mk1 or the later Mk2, since the Mk2 gained a little extra headroom below — the only spec that separates the two marks. No year marks that switch, so confirming the mark directly on a given boat is the only reliable way to know which headroom it offers. Comparing two Invictas means asking which mark and which builder before anything else.

Van de Stadt's underlying hull and its encapsulated-ballast keel don't change from boat to boat; what changes is everything downstream of the moulding, since a shop other than the moulder typically did the fit-out. Treat mark and builder, not badge, as the variables worth comparing across listings. The full model directory on this page is the place to check where a given hull falls in that history.
