Buying a used Harmony: confirm which builder made your boat

A "Harmony" listing needs sorting before it can be judged. Most are French monohulls Olivier Poncin's Poncin Yachts built between roughly 2001 and 2008 — the company he founded after selling Dufour, and the one that later became Catana Group. A smaller number are the Harmony 22, an unrelated 1977 American one-design with no tie to Poncin's yard, or the older Harmony 31. None of that changes what a given hull is worth inspecting for, but it does change who built it, how it was engineered, and how much of a support network stands behind it — so start with the model number, not the name on the transom.

Which era to target

The French range came out of a tight production window: Poncin launched Harmony in 2001, the entry-level 34 didn't arrive until 2006, and the 2008 financial crisis ended production shortly after; the 47, the range's midpoint, was built in roughly that same 2004-to-2008 stretch. That narrow window means construction era isn't much of a variable within the French range — fleet age is the bigger factor, and it's consistent across the lineup. The Harmony 22 sits in a completely different era, a 1977 one-design of which only 37 hulls were ever built, and the Harmony 31 predates all of it, built between 1964 and 1968.

What to inspect across the range

Velmundi's write-ups of the range flag two-winch systems on both the 34 and the 47's charter version — on the 34 they require constant blocking and unblocking during manoeuvres, and the charter 47 draws outright criticism for having only two — so it's worth working the winches in person rather than trusting listing photos. The same source raises a softer resale story on more than one model: the 38's resale values are described as lagging behind better-known brands, while the 47 is flagged for a smaller dealer and parts network, a real consideration since production ended. And because the French fleet is uniformly aging, rigging deserves attention regardless of model — well-used 47s draw specific rigging concern, and the 38's write-up recommends checking standing rigging, deck fittings, and engine hours on account of the fleet's age.

Within the French range, size and role narrow quickly: the 34 is the smallest and entry-level, arriving in 2006; the 47 sits at the range's midpoint and was pitched, per Velmundi, as a performance cruiser priced below major French and German rivals; the 38 and 42 fill in between, and the 52-5 tops the lineup. None of that applies to a Harmony 22 or a Harmony 31, which come from entirely different builders and eras and shouldn't be cross-shopped against the French range on brand reputation alone. The full model directory on this page sorts all of it by size and generation for closer comparison.
