Buying a used Fellowship: a small Dutch yard's story, told largely in its own words

A used Fellowship is, in practice, a Fellowship 28: a Dutch-built fiberglass cruiser from Jachtwerf Gebr. de Kloet BV, a two-brother family yard whose own history page is essentially the only word on the brand that exists. That single-source situation matters for how a buyer should weigh what's said about the line -- the sales figures and success stories come from the builder's own telling, not independent verification -- but the underlying facts of a small, German-market-focused production run are durable enough to buy against.

Which era to target

The design pedigree sits with the first model in the line: the yard's own account credits the Fellowship 27 -- one of the earliest polyester S-frame (S-spant) sailboats -- to designer Teun de Kloet specifically. The brothers bet heavily on that boat, putting a demonstration model in front of buyers at a boat show in Friedrichshafen and, by their own account, selling as many as ten of them on the spot. Roughly 200 examples of the 27 were built before the Fellowship 28 took over, and the 33 continued the run afterward. The 28 is the model in this catalog, and its listed years here span 1976 to 1994; the yard's own account attributes that long run to selling more than 650 of the 28 alone, the great majority of them to Germany.

Keep the numbering straight going in: the 27, 28, and 33 are three distinct boats in one Fellowship line, not interchangeable names for the same hull, and only the 28 is what's represented in this catalog. The 28's volume is worth weighing on its own: by the yard's own count it sold in the hundreds, overwhelmingly into Germany rather than spread evenly across export markets, so buyers should expect documentation, service history, and parts support oriented toward Dutch and German dealers rather than an English-language yacht market.
