Buying a used Bruce Roberts: you're buying the builder, not the plans

Bruce Roberts sold drawings and kits, not finished boats, so the hands that built a given hull matter more than the model name on the transom. Most of the catalog reached the water through amateur owner-builders working from purchased plans, or through small independent yards finishing the boat to their own standard — never a single factory floor with a repeatable process. Two boats sharing a model designation can be built decades apart, in different structural materials, by builders of wildly different skill, so evaluate the individual hull in front of you rather than trusting the reputation of the name. Build-quality variance runs wider across this range than on almost any production make, and the survey needs to reflect that.

Which era to target

Company history offers a couple of useful markers rather than a clean chronology. Roberts sometimes explicitly superseded earlier plans with newer ones designed to fix them — the Roberts 42, for instance, was drawn to replace the earlier Mauritius 43 and Norfolk 43 — so where a later design exists in the same size class, it typically reflects lessons the design office had already learned from the plans it replaced. The corporate split that followed also matters for documentation: the original partnership divided into two companies in 2000, and tracing a boat's design lineage may mean working out which of the two successor businesses now holds its original plan records.

What to inspect across the range

Confirm actual hull material before anything else: the same Roberts model number could be ordered in steel, fiberglass, aluminum, or wood-epoxy, and independent brokerage archives for boats like the Roberts 36 record both steel and fiberglass hulls sold under the identical name. Expect substantial owner modification from the stock plan, too — documented examples include a Roberts 36 extended from 36 to 37 feet with a relocated head and reworked cockpit, and a Spray 38 rebuilt with an aft cockpit in place of the original layout. Neither divergence is a red flag on its own, but it means dimensions and layout can't be assumed from the model name and need direct verification. A qualified survey matters more here than almost anywhere else in the used market: one surveyor's report, published on the builder's own site, called a Roberts 36 pilothouse "one of the best-built steel boats" they had seen, in the same write-up that flagged a dangerously slippery deck as the boat's major safety recommendation — exceptional construction and a basic oversight can coexist in the same amateur-built hull.
