Buying a used Belliure: two very different boats under one name

A used Belliure is one of two very different boats wearing the same builder's name: a small-series, 30-to-50-foot fiberglass cruiser from the yard's Peter Ibold-designed line, or one of a handful of large one-off sailing yachts designed by Ron Holland in the early-to-mid 1980s. Because Belliure was a small family yard rather than a mass producer, a given hull's individual build and design lineage carry more weight than the badge alone — figuring out which of the two lines a boat belongs to is the first step before judging anything else about it.

Which era to target

A boat carrying one of the Ibold-line model numbers — 30, 35, 40, 41, or 50 — dates somewhere between the 50's 1976 launch and the 41's arrival in 1984, a standard fiberglass build from a yard not far removed from its wooden-boat years. A boat from the Holland-designed side — the 63SY, 83SY, 86SY, or 66SY, launched at the start of the 1980s — comes from a different build altogether: Belliure retooled its yard specifically for that generation, working in Kevlar, carbon, and sandwich laminates beyond the standard fiberglass of the smaller line. Confirming which side of that split a given hull sits on says more about its underlying construction than the model number alone.

Most used Belliures on the market will come from the Ibold-designed cruising line, sized from 30 to 50 feet and built for private ownership rather than one-off commission. The Holland-designed yachts sit in a different category entirely — larger, built as one-offs in far smaller numbers, closer to superyachts than production cruisers, with only a single 86 ever built. The full model directory on this page breaks the range down by year and length.
