Buying a used Aphrodite: confirm the lineage before the boat

A listing that says "Aphrodite" does not by itself say much about what's actually for sale. The name covers three lineages that never worked together — a Danish one-design daysailer built across a chain of yards, a Swedish ocean racer from the company that became Arcona Yachts, and a retro-trimmed cruiser Najad sells under a heritage-look styling package — plus a cluster of larger 1970s-80s cruising sizes whose builder isn't documented. Get the lineage wrong and every downstream judgment, from expected build quality to who might support the boat, gets applied to the wrong history. The model number is the fastest way to sort it: a 101 points to the Danish daysailer chain, a 25 to the Boo Marin ocean racer, and a 380/460/511 to the Najad-built range.

Which era to target

A 101 built during the Bianca-era years, before that yard's 1987 bankruptcy, is a different proposition than one built later under Ott Yacht's ownership beginning in 1994 — the yard difference maps directly onto known construction issues, covered below. The Aphrodite 25 belongs to a single production run beginning in 1976, from Boo Marin, the yard that later became Arcona Yachts. The Najad-built Aphrodite range is the newest of the three: the underlying 380 hull dates to 2004, with the retro Aphrodite treatment also extending to the larger 460 and 511.

What to inspect across the range

The clearest documented guidance applies to the 101. Expect evidence of an osmosis repair — or budget for one — on any hull from the Bianca-built era before 1987; owners also report a flock coating on Bianca-era interiors that's difficult to strip, and it's worth checking older hulls generally for soft foredecks, leaking rudder shaft guides, and railing-post condition. On the larger cruising sizes, a Yachtdatabase review of the Aphrodite 33 flags balsa-cored hull and deck construction: any fitting that penetrates the sandwich needs careful sealing, since water reaching the balsa core will eventually rot it at real repair cost. Neither the Aphrodite 25 nor the Najad-built range has a documented issue list to draw on here.

Size and lineage, not badge, should drive the search: the 101 is a light one-design daysailer near 32 feet overall; the 25 is a compact 1970s ocean racer near the same size but from an entirely different yard and design brief; the unidentified-builder cruising sizes run roughly 29 to 42 feet; and the Najad-built 380/460/511 range is the largest and most recently designed of the group, with a modern hull under its heritage-styled deck. The full model directory on this page sorts the range by these distinctions for closer comparison.
