Vismara Marine

Active: 1984 – Present

For decades, the name Vismara Marine has been synonymous with cutting-edge design, performance, and bespoke craftsmanship in the yachting world. From its base in Viareggio, Italy, the shipyard has carved out a unique niche, consistently pushing the boundaries of yacht design and construction to deliver vessels that are as exhilarating to sail as they are comfortable to live aboard.

The Origin Story

Vismara Marine was founded in 1984 by the visionary naval architect, Alessandro Vismara. A graduate of Yacht Design from the Southampton College of Higher Education in England, Vismara honed his skills working as the chief of naval construction at the renowned Perini Navi before embarking on his own venture. His foundational vision was clear: to create yachts that seamlessly blended the thrilling performance of a racer with the luxurious comfort and ease of handling expected in a cruising vessel.

The company's journey began with immediate success. In 1984, Vismara collaborated with Luca Taddei on the design of "Lace Wing," a 3/4 Ton winner, marking an auspicious start. This early achievement set the tone for Vismara's philosophy, demonstrating that high performance could indeed coexist with cruising capability.

History and Evolution

From its inception, Vismara Marine's history has been characterized by a relentless pursuit of innovation and a willingness to embrace advanced technologies and materials. The shipyard has launched over 130 custom yachts, many of which are now considered iconic designs that have influenced the modern cruiser-racer segment.

A key aspect of Vismara's evolution has been its pioneering use of light and innovative construction techniques, often incorporating advanced composites to achieve exceptional strength-to-weight ratios. This approach has allowed Vismara to continuously build yachts that are both fast and user-friendly. The company's commitment to continuous research and development, including VPP programs and tank testing, has been integral to its design process since the beginning. Vismara Marine is also recognized as a trendsetter, particularly in the design of yacht keels. Beyond custom projects, Vismara has also developed a "prêt-a-porter" concept, offering refined production models that encapsulate their core design principles.

Design Philosophy and Identity

Vismara Marine has cultivated a distinctive "Vismara Style," recognized globally for its elegant lines, innovative solutions, and emphasis on user-friendly technology. The shipyard's reputation in the sailing world is built on its ability to create fast cruising yachts that do not compromise on comfort or ease of handling. The company's philosophy centers on a deep understanding of the marine environment, designing yachts that perform exceptionally while ensuring silence and comfort on board. Clients often seek Vismara for their desire for easy-to-handle yachts that offer both performance and luxury.

A hallmark of Vismara's approach is the close collaboration between the shipyard and the owner, often facilitated by a "single interlocutor" to simplify the design and build process. This allows for highly customized yachts that truly reflect the owner's desires. While Alessandro Vismara himself is the driving force behind the designs, the company has also collaborated with other notable names, including Lucio Micheletti and the Vismara-Spadolini partnership, on various projects.

Iconic Models and Legacy

Over its four decades, Vismara Marine has produced a remarkable fleet of sailing and, more recently, motor yachts, many of which have left an indelible mark on the industry. Notable iconic models include custom yachts, the Farr Custom 72, the V47 FC, the MY52, and the Momi M80. The Vismara V47 Candelluva, for instance, has demonstrated its prowess by dominating IRC rankings.

One significant milestone was the 2015 launch of the Vismara V50 "Dragon," described as the first true long-sailing yacht equipped with two Sail Drive engines and an innovative exterior. Other notable projects include the innovative V65, developed in conjunction with an experienced owner, and the Vismara 63, which even saw the creation of a specialized 3-meter trimaran-inspired tender for support. Vismara has also successfully ventured into custom motor yacht designs, bringing its innovative sailing yacht principles to the powerboat market.

Today, Vismara Marine continues to be a vibrant force in the luxury yacht market, operating from its well-established facility in Viareggio. The company maintains its commitment to innovation, with new models continuously being developed and introduced to the market.
