One Design Composites

Active: 2012 – Present

In the dynamic world of yachting, where innovation constantly reshapes the horizon, One Design Composites has emerged as a significant player, specializing in advanced composite construction and contract building. Rooted in a history of strategic evolution and a dedication to high-quality craftsmanship, the company has quickly established itself as a reliable partner in the marine industry.

The Origin Story

One Design Composites began its journey in 2012 under the umbrella of Enviro-Holdings, LLC, a Florida Corporation. Initially, Enviro-Holdings, LLC, set out with a broader objective: to provide consulting and business development services across various targeted industries. This consultative approach laid the groundwork for its eventual deep dive into marine manufacturing, leveraging its expertise to build robust partnerships and undertake specialized projects.

History and Evolution

The pivotal moment for Enviro-Holdings, LLC, and its DBA, One Design Composites, arrived in the fall of 2017. It was then that the company initiated a consulting relationship with Columbia Yachts. This collaboration soon blossomed into a more substantial venture, with Enviro-Holdings successfully negotiating the acquisition of certain assets from the long-standing Columbia Yachts. This strategic move also saw Vince Valdes, son of Columbia's original founder Richard Valdes, join the team, agreeing to provide consulting and sales support. This acquisition marked One Design Composites' firm commitment to boat building and the marine sector.

Further solidifying its position, December 2018 saw One Design Composites secure a multi-year contract with WD Schock, a renowned boat builder with over 70 years of history. This agreement specifically tasked One Design Composites with building the popular Harbor 20 Yacht, underscoring their capabilities in high-volume, precision composite manufacturing.

Design Philosophy and Identity

One Design Composites has carved a niche for itself through its focus on contract building for marine companies, undertaking selected custom marine projects, and specializing in advanced composite construction. Their name itself, "One Design Composites," highlights their expertise in working with composite materials like fiberglass and carbon, which are celebrated for their light weight, strength, and durability. The company prides itself on transforming ideas into innovations, emphasizing design excellence and versatile manufacturing capabilities through in-house design and rapid prototyping.

While One Design Composites primarily functions as a builder for other brands and custom projects, their core strength lies in their mastery of composite materials. This expertise allows them to construct boats that meet stringent performance, comfort, and structural integrity requirements. They are known for their ability to handle complex designs and ensure that projects are "manufacturing-ready from day one."

One notable collaboration includes working with Tim Kernan for the Carbon 32, a performance-oriented design. Their partnership with W.D. Schock for the Harbor 20 further demonstrates their capacity to produce well-regarded, established one-design sailboats.

Iconic Models and Legacy

As a contract builder, One Design Composites contributes significantly to the legacy of other established boat lines while also fostering its own projects. Two key models are central to their current production:

  • Carbon 32: This 32-foot (9.75-meter) performance yacht, designed by Tim Kernan, is a testament to One Design Composites' ability to build competitive and advanced sailboats. The Carbon 32 benefits from a proven hull design, assembled by experienced builders, aiming for a worry-free ownership experience for those seeking a competitive edge.
  • Harbor 20 Yacht: A popular American trailerable day sailer and one-design club racer, the Harbor 20 was designed by Steve Schock of W.D. Schock Corp. One Design Composites' multi-year contract to build the Harbor 20 showcases their precision and volume capabilities in producing a boat known for its stability and competitive racing characteristics.

These projects underscore One Design Composites' role in bringing high-performance and beloved one-design sailboats to life, contributing to the broader marine community.

The Builder Today

Today, One Design Composites continues to operate under Enviro-Holdings, LLC, maintaining its focus on contract manufacturing, custom projects, and the production of the Carbon 32 and Harbor 20. The company's current appeal lies with clients seeking a partner with advanced composite manufacturing capabilities, whether they are established marine companies needing production support or individuals with unique custom yacht aspirations. The emphasis on high-quality composite construction ensures that their boats are durable, lightweight, and perform to exacting standards. While a formal "owner community" specifically for One Design Composites might be less pronounced given its role as a contract builder, the boats they construct, such as the Harbor 20, certainly boast strong and active owner associations. Their expertise positions them as a key behind-the-scenes force in modern yacht production, ensuring precision and quality in every composite hull they produce.
