Botved Boats

Active: 1951 – 1991

From its humble beginnings on the bustling Copenhagen harbor to becoming a powerhouse in European powerboat manufacturing, Botved Boats, later known as Coronet Boats, carved out a significant niche in the marine industry. Founded by the visionary Ole Botved, the company became synonymous with high-quality, beautifully designed powerboats that garnered a loyal following across Scandinavia, Europe, and the UK.

The Origin Story

Botved Boats was established in 1951 by Ole Botved, originally situated in Copenhagen's Tuborg harbor. While the specific background or initial motivation of Ole Botved isn't extensively detailed, his ambition was clear: to build boats that would stand out. Though the company later became famous for its powerboats, early production included at least two sailboat models, albeit in limited numbers. The firm's focus quickly shifted, however, with the Coronet line of powerboats becoming its enduring legacy.

History and Evolution

The company's journey began in Copenhagen, but manufacturing operations soon expanded, relocating to Slagelse in 1955. A pivotal moment in the company's early history and a testament to the durability and seaworthiness of its vessels occurred in 1958 when founder Ole Botved himself undertook an Atlantic crossing in a Coronet Explorer 22" boat. This daring feat underscored the quality and robust construction of Coronet boats.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Botved Boats experienced a period of remarkable growth. The company rapidly transitioned to fiberglass construction, embracing deep-vee hull designs that would become a hallmark of their powerboats. By the 1970s, Coronet had grown into Europe's largest boat manufacturer, boasting a reputation for iconic designs and high quality. Over its history, the company is estimated to have built approximately 20,000 boats. In 1980, Botved Boats officially transformed, becoming Coronet Boats A/S. The company's original run concluded in 1991.

Design Philosophy and Identity

Coronet boats earned a strong reputation in the marine world for their distinctive design, high quality, and exceptional seaworthiness. Their signature feature was often the deep-vee fiberglass hull, which contributed to their renowned sea-keeping characteristics. This commitment to quality and thoughtful design meant that owning a Coronet was often considered a protected investment.

A significant contributor to the brand's acclaimed designs was Richard C. Cole, a prolific naval architect who collaborated with Botved Boats. His expertise helped shape the aesthetic and performance characteristics that made Coronet boats so desirable. The brand became known for producing comfortable family cruisers and capable day boats, designed to offer both performance and enjoyable experiences on the water.

Iconic Models and Legacy

Throughout its history, Botved Boats produced a range of highly successful and iconic models. Among the most significant were the Coronet 21 Day Cruiser and the Coronet 32 Oceanfarer, which became particularly well-known. The Coronet Explorer 22", as proven by Ole Botved's transatlantic voyage, also holds a special place in the company's history. Other notable models include the Coronet 26, the Coronet 290 Weekend, the Coronet 32 Ocean Farer Wing, and the Coronet 35 Suncruiser. These models were typically used for day cruising, overnight cruising, saltwater fishing, and watersports.

The enduring appeal of Coronet designs ensured a strong legacy, even after the original company's cessation of operations.

The Builder Today

While the original Botved Boats ceased operations in 1991, the Coronet name and its celebrated heritage have seen a revival. Today, the iconic Coronet brand is back, aiming to continue its tradition of beautiful design and high quality. Andreas Lind serves as the general manager, leading the renewed vision for the brand and involving experienced boat designers and project managers in the development of new models. The rights to the Coronet name and its rich history have been acquired, signaling a commitment to honoring its past while looking to the future.

Modern Coronet boats aim to appeal to discerning boaters who appreciate a blend of classic design and contemporary performance. For instance, the Coronet 35 Suncruiser is described as a unique blend of "Norwegian design, produced in Sweden, all built into a Danish brand with long traditions". The strong heritage of Coronet has fostered a vibrant owner community, exemplified by groups like the Coronet Yacht Club, where enthusiasts connect and celebrate their cherished vessels. This enduring community speaks volumes about the lasting impact and quality of the boats originally conceived by Ole Botved.
