In the mid1980s, Charles William "Bill" Wellington set out to design the definitive vessel for heavyweather passagemaking and longrange selfsufficiency. Working out of the Wellington Boats Inc. facility in Jacksonville, Florida, alongside his wife Marjorie, Wellington envisioned a yacht that successfully merged the structural impenetrability of a commercialgrade trawler with the elegant oceancrossing capabilities of a traditional cutter. The result of this ambitious design brief was the Wellington 57 MS (Motorsailer), introduced in 1986. A true semicustom masterpiece of which only nine hulls were ever constructed, the 57 MS stood apart from the more common production cruisers of its era by offering an "unsinkable" hull design lined with foam flotation. Designed as a rugged luxury expedition platform, the vessel was built for the owneroperator who viewed the horizon not as a weekend destination, but as a permanent residence.
