In the dawning years of the fiberglass revolution, boatbuilder and designer Ted Tyler carved out a highly specialized niche on the shores of Oakdale, Long Island. Launching the Tylercraft 22 in 1960, Tyler sought to address a challenge that plagued shallow coastal waterways: how to combine the cabin volume of a pocket cruiser with the shallowdraft capability of a centerboarder, without the mechanical complexity and interior intrusion of a centerboard trunk. The solution was the twinkeel, or bilgekeel, configuration—a design philosophy widely embraced in the hightidal estuaries of Great Britain but relatively rare in American production boatbuilding. The Tylercraft 22 stood out as a rugged, utilitarian platform that offered a level of structural security and shorehugging versatility that few of its contemporaries could match.
