The Sparkman & Stephens (S&S) Gulfstream 42 represents a highwater mark in the collaboration between the world’s preeminent naval architecture firm of the mid20th century and the legendary Robert E. Derecktor. Born of the Cruising Club of America (CCA) rating rule, the Gulfstream 42 (specifically S&S Design 1433) was conceived as a "goldplater" cruiserracer—a vessel capable of winning prestigious offshore races like the NewportBermuda while providing a level of interior luxury and "seakindliness" that modern lightdisplacement boats often lack. While some examples were built by other yards, those produced by Derecktor Shipyards are particularly prized for their robust construction and the builder’s storied history in America’s Cup and highperformance yachting. The Gulfstream 42 is essentially a larger, more powerful evolution of the "Finisterre" type, the 38foot design that dominated racing in the 1950s by proving that a beamy, centerboardequipped boat could be both fast and exceptionally seaworthy.
