Launched in 1971, the Puma 23 is a iconic pocket cruiser that played a foundational role in the modernization of Spanish recreational sailing. Built by NaoGlass, S.A., which operated as the marine division of the industrial plastics manufacturer Inerga near Barcelona, Spain, this compact monohull was designed by the esteemed British naval architecture firm Holman & Pye. It was conceived during a period when the marine industry was transitioning to glassreinforced plastic, a time when fiberglass layups were determined by conservative engineering and physical trials rather than computer optimization. As a result, the Puma 23 is historically recognized for its exceptionally robust, overbuilt hull construction, which frequently involved six to seven alternating handlaid layers of fiberglass. To broaden its market reach, the design was also manufactured and marketed in northern Europe and the United Kingdom as the Jaguar 23, cementing its reputation as a versatile and seakindly pocket cruiser capable of handling both the steep chops of the North Sea and the deep swells of the Mediterranean.
