In the early 1960s, a quiet revolution was taking place on the waters of New Zealand’s Hauraki Gulf. Des Townson, a selftaught designer with a rare instinct for producing beautiful, easily driven hulls, turned his attention to creating an accessible pocket keelboat. The result was the Pied Piper 22, affectionately known to generations of Kiwi sailors as the "Piedy." First slipping into the water in late 1962 and officially established as a planbuilt class in 1964, this 22foot fractional sloop became a fundamental rite of passage. Designed to bridge the gap between highperformance racing dinghies and larger keelboats, the Pied Piper 22 combined lightweight plywood construction with a highly athletic sail plan, establishing a legacy of fierce harbor racing and an legendary, tightly knit social culture.
