Designed in 1969 by Canadian naval architect Bruce Kirby and industrial designer Ian Bruce, the boat originally known as the Laser—and officially rebranded as the ILCA dinghy in 2020—stands as the most prolific singlehanded racing class in history. The transition to the ILCA name was born of a complex trademark and licensing dispute between the International Laser Class Association (ILCA) and its largest historic builder, LaserPerformance. As the class stripped LaserPerformance of its building rights for violating strict manufacturing standards, legacy builders such as Performance Sailcraft Australia (PSA) stepped forward to preserve the class’s heritage. Utilizing the definitive Mould 003—the tooling that has produced Olympicstandard hulls since the late 1990s—Performance Sailcraft has kept the class's strict onedesign ethos intact. Built to be simple, rugged, and intensely competitive, the ILCA hull is designed to eliminate equipment disparities, ensuring that victories are determined entirely by athletic ability and tactical intelligence on the water.
