The O'Day 20 arrived during the peak of the 1970s trailersailing boom, designed to bridge the gap between opencockpit daysailers and larger, more expensive coastal cruisers. While many boats of this length are essentially dinghies with a lid, the O'Day 20 was engineered as a miniaturized yacht, featuring a ballasted shoal keel and a retractable centerboard. This configuration allowed the boat to be easily trailered and launched in shallow water while maintaining enough stability for overnight coastal hops. Built primarily between 1973 and 1978, the model became a staple in the American smallboat market, offering a level of utility that prioritized ease of use and forgiveness for novice sailors.
